Tag der Offenen Topferei (Open Pottery Day)
On the second weekend in March, 521 ceramic workshops opened their studios for Open pottery day! Throughout Bavaria, where we reside, there were 27 pottery studios participating in the nationwide event – we had the opportunity to visit eight of those studios. All of which are based in villages we have yet to visit so we were excited to spend the day hopping from village to village getting to see so much beautiful work and seeing a little bit behind the curtain of how the studios throughout Germany operate.
We started the day by visiting the studio that was farthest from us and working our way back so the drive home at the end of the day wasn’t too long. Whenever we participate in events like this I always get a little nervous with the language barrier. My german has definitely improved since moving but I still lack a lot of confidence in having conversations outside of our daily grocery and restaurant chatter. I was hopeful that some of the people may speak English and we got really lucky in being able to have some really pleasant conversations with some of the artists. Listed below are the studios we visited, I got a handful of photos throughout the day from each of them…except one.
Topferei Drehwurm
IMotschenbach 12. 95336 Mainleus
Topferei Peesten
Peesten 19. 95359 Kasendorf.
We picked up one of these darling pestle and mortars. I love pieces that show the clay body of the work – this piece had a beautiful rough texture.
Topferei Renner
Eckersdorfer Weg 1. 95349 Thurnau
Keramikwerkstatt Tittmann
Berndorf 43. 95349
This studio had the cutest little snow drops and crocus on their property. I feel embarrassed to admit the only reason I know what these flowers are is from playing The Sims – don’t judge.
Shelby and I were obsessed with this little guy… I still think about. May have to be our purchase for next years open studio.
Topferei Pleofen
Pleofen 14. 95488, Eckersdorf.
Keramik im blauen Haus
Eiergasse 13. 96124 Hollfed.
*This was the only studio I didn’t get any photos of work. We all got caught up in such great conversations with Pat about living in Germany, learning the language. She shared a lot about the Pottery history in Thurnau – and many of their events they hose (that we will definitely check out.) She also told us about the market season that a lot of potters participate in. I’ve found info about one so far and am excited to check it out!
ili Keramik
Grossenhul 19. 96197 Wonsees.
